Manifestation, and how to create the life you want!
I first came across the concept of manifestation and the Law of Attraction many years ago when I read ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne.
I’ve read it twice, and I guarantee I’ll read it again in the future. This book will have a lifelong place on my ceaselessly expanding bookshelf, and I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone who wishes to attract abundance into their lives or carve out a completely different life altogether.
The law of attraction represents how you can (and unconsciously do) manifest things into your life (whether negative or positive), simply by thinking of them or focusing your energy and attention on them. Such things can include (but are certainly not limited to) business, money, love, luck, health, material objects, and conversely misfortune, ill health, negative relationships, scarcity… the list goes on.

Some may say that the law of attraction has no foundation in science or psychology, and I guess you’re either into this kind of thing or you’re not. As a lover of all things otherworldly - I most definitely am! I’m in total awe of the boundless, expansive, immeasurable universe and I fully believe there’s an untold force at work out there that yields infinite power - something that we as mere mortals are not privy to and will likely never fully comprehend. It’s what revs my engine - give me a bottle of wine and start a conversation about the planets, the universe, where we come from, God, life beyond the veil, and I’ll be up all night, jabbering away to my heart's content.
It’s my belief that we’re all connected to this vast, magical universe, and we have a divine ability to be in touch with our higher selves (and even transcend the limitations of the physical world). As humans we’re not only limited by our physical selves, but by our limiting beliefs (which we can change!) As humans, we imagine we’re the most significant entity in the universe and that we know everything there is to know about the world we live in (I think they call it human supremacy), and that if there was more out there, science would have proved it. I have to admit I reject this theory - I think as a planet and a race we’re just a mere speck, a drop in the ocean, a tiny thin thread in the great astronomical tapestry, and the majority of us are walking around with our eyes and ears closed, having not yet awakened to the immensity of what’s actually out there.
Before I deviate further and this blog post turns into one of physical cosmology, let’s get back to manifestation and what it means to us in the human world.
Manifestation is essentially our ability to create the world around us - what we desire we can have… what we think we can achieve... thoughts become things... what we dwell on, we create more of... We’re all manifesting, whether consciously or otherwise, attracting like energy to like energy. Our thoughts, energy, beliefs and actions create our reality.
Science has proved that everything in the universe is energy (I think this was influenced by Einsteen himself), and that energy vibrates at different frequencies. Every thought, every feeling, every belief we have, vibrates at a certain frequency, and such energy influences the energy all around us, and attracts the same type of energy right back to us - like a magnet. Are you still awake?
Have you ever dwelled on a negative situation, or replayed an argument over and over in your head (even if it hasn't actually happened - we’re good at doing that aren’t we), and it actually makes you ‘feel’ negative? By doing this, you’re vibrating at a certain (lower) frequency, and emitting lower energies, which will only attract other lower energies (i.e. you will attract the type of scenario you’re imagining). Negativity breeds negativity. If you think bad things will happen, they most likely will.
If you spend your life thinking things like “shitty things always happen to me” or “my life is shit”, then expect more shitty things to come your way. Thinking negatively about something will bring more of the same - more adversity, misfortune, jealousy, resentment, bitterness, disatisfaction, failure, bad luck. And guess what, you’ll attract Negative Nancy’s into your life, and the vicious circle will continue. It’s not possible to bring good things into your life by thinking negatively or being ungrateful (and no-one likes a wingey cow either).
Turn it around and think happy, satisfied, positive and thankful thoughts. You’ll raise your vibration and operate at a higher frequency and will therefore attract like energy (attracting more happy, positive things into your world that you will be grateful for). By focusing on the things that make you joyful and by exuding gratitude for the things you already have, you’ll attract abundance into your life. You’ll naturally attract positive, happy people into your life who will in turn bring further positive opportunities your way. Ever see those people where you think gosh they’re so lucky, good things always happen to them and everything always seems to go their way? It’s a virtuous circle. They’re not lucky, they’re not chosen ones, their reality is shaped by their own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, their positive outlook, their gratitude and their actions.
So now we’ve established what manifestation is, how can we consciously use it in our everyday lives?
Some people think the act of manifestation is a magical, miraculous, out of this world phenomenon, a universal law that creates any outcome that is wished for. And as something that’s ultimately the responsibility of the universe, all we need to do is sit back at wait for it to happen. i.e. ask and you shall receive - simple as that! Yay - wouldn’t that be nice! However, as Henry Ford wisely said:
“Vision without execution is just hallucination”
A more logical view is that manifestation is not just about magic and miracles, it’s about becoming aligned with your goals and desires, believing 100% that you will get them, and then fully committing yourself to putting real actions in place in order to achieve them. i.e. we’re ultimately responsible for what we create. I believe in both - the magic and the effort - but combined. If you put the work in, the universe will reward you, however you’ve got to put the leg work in and be prepared to do some of the heavy lifting!
So how can I actually manifest the life I want?
A vision board (or dream board as some call it) is a great aid for visualisation and manifestation. It’s essentially any type of board where you display images, quotes, words or anything that visually represents what you want to be, have, or do in your life. You can use a whiteboard, a cork board, or even a digital vision board, and it can be as big or as small as you like. It’s a great tool to firstly help you become absolutely clear on everything you desire, and then allowing you to view it and focus your energy on it. I would advise having a physical vision board and displaying it somewhere where you’ll see it daily, for example by your bed or on your desk. Mine has pride of place on the desk in my office, which is a little sanctuary slash creative space I’ve carved out just for me #selfish #nokidsallowed #sorrynotsorry
How to create a vision board
GET CLEAR - get absolutely clear on what is is you want (and I mean every single detail - be unapologetic) - love, marriage, business, money, dream home, world travel, sculpted body, that handbag that costs more than your house, 7 children, a new car. Don’t be vague - the more detail the better. For example TRAVEL - where do you want to travel? When? For how long? Which hotel do you want to stay in? How much do the flights cost? Place images of the resort, airline tickets and relevant text on your board. MONEY - how much money do you want per month, per year? What will you use it for? Be specific. LOVE - what does your future husband look like? Tall, short, muscular, blonde, dark? HOME - what does your dream home look like? Victorian, modern? How many bedrooms? What location? Again use pictures of your dream home. Set exact dates for achieving these things.
GET CREATIVE - find things that represent or symbolise your feelings, your desires, or the things you want. For example pictures of your family, inspirational quotes, affirmations, travel tickets, pictures of awards you want to win, books you want to write, cutouts from magazines... create a collage of words and pictures that really make clear your goals and dreams.
FEEL IT - you must have an exceptionally strong desire for these things, and a high expectation that they are achievable. Define them as if you already have them - you need to really feel what it’s like to have these things! You can have a list of 100 things but if you don’t truly desire them or believe it’s possible to get them, you won’t manifest them.
DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE HOW - don’t be limited by your physical senses or physical abilities - this is where you have to believe in the magic (ever heard of the phrase believe in the not yet seen?) We might not have the power or the knowledge at this stage, as to how these things will materialise - just leave it to the universe (yes you will have to take physical action but the universe will play its part)
TURN VISION INTO ACTION - now you have to take action. You can’t just pin a picture of a winning lottery ticket onto a board then go about your daily life and expect it to turn into reality - that’s just fairytale. You’ve got to play your part. Look at the things on your board that you want, the life you dream of. Look at the timescales. Now start to plan WHAT you need to do in order to achieve these things. Start putting realistic plans in place to move closer to achieving these things.
MAINTAIN A POSITIVE MINDSET - don’t let fear or disbelief creep in and don’t get caught up in timescales if it’s not happening as soon as you’d like - believe the universe has this under control! You have to stay positive. As long as you keep believing with all of your being, and as long as you continue taking the necessary steps towards achieving your desires, there’s no reason they won’t materialise. In the meantime stay happy and continue enjoying life, and being grateful for where you’re at and what you have now.
VISUALISE - as mentioned before, keep your vision board somewhere where you’ll see it as often as possible. If you can, set some time aside every day (upon waking, before you go to sleep, whenever you sit at your desk - as much time and as often as you can), to look at your board and visualise and feel the things you desire. The more time you spend on this the better. Meditate on it, and give thanks as if you have already received the things you so desire.
If a vision board is not your thing, you could put your images, affirmations, cutouts etc in a special box, or stick them into a notebook that you can keep under your pillow or in your bag.
Gratitude is one of the greatest, most powerful tools we can pluck from our emotional toolbox, to bring even more good and abundance into our lives. If you’re feeling grateful, it’s pretty difficult to feel negative, and as you focus on gratitude, your energy is transformed into a powerful high frequency which then attracts like energy to it. If you’re sending out grateful energy, you will attract more people, things and experiences back to you to be grateful for.
Look around you, and you will start noticing innumerable things to be thankful for, from the world we live in, the trees, the air we breathe, to your home, your family, the food on the table and the clothes on your back. There is always, always something to be grateful for. As Oprah Winfrey so beautifully put it:
“If you focus on what you have, you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough”
Be grateful for the things you want - by this I mean imagine you already have them - the new job, new relationship, new car, business success - everything on your vision board. Sounds a bit self-entitled I know, but act like you have them already. Use your imagination to really feel what it feels like to already have that life and those things you desire. Those feelings will radiate such a positive, high frequency and just like a mirror, they will bounce such things back to you.
Keeping a gratitude journal is a great way to remind yourself of all the things to be grateful for. Noting down the things you’re truly thankful for before bed each night (home, family, job, freedom, friendships, good health, fluffy unicorn socks, Grey’s Anatomy, Gin) is a great way to raise your vibration and attract more good stuff into your life.
I’m trying to create an environment of gratitude at home by sharing the things I’m grateful for with my children, whilst we’re chatting over dinner or just before we say goodnight, and encouraging them to do the same. I’m hoping it will keep them grounded (when they think they’re the most badly done to kids on the block because I’m serving up veg - AGAIN!)
Reciting positive affirmations is also a great way to stay positive and keep your vibrations high. You could try writing them on post-its and sticking them around your house - on your fridge, the bathroom mirror, on your desk at work - anywhere you’ll see them regularly.
Surround yourself with the right people - your vibe attracts your tribe
To conclude - be grateful for the things you have now - as they say “if you can’t be thankful for what you have now, what makes you think you’ll be thankful for anything else?” Get absolutely clear on what you want your life to look like and what things you want in it, and go into as much detail as possible. Don’t be hazy or uncertain - be clear, precise and firm. Detail what you need to do to firstly get on the road to achieving your desires, then ensure you are regularly reviewing your plan (and adapting it if necessary) to ensure you’re continuing to move closer towards your goals.
Set positive intentions. Believe in the magic and the power of the universe, and in your divine ability to connect to source and bring about all the wonders the world (and life) has to offer. Be unfailingly conscious of the energy you’re emitting, the thoughts you’re having, and where you’re focusing your energy, as this will undeniably shape your course of events. Surround yourself with positive people, and refuse to be pulled into any drama or negativity. Guard your desires fiercely, nourish them, work hard and play your part, and finally - have faith!
